Breached
Spring 2020 - Present
Breached explores the tension between beauty and discomfort, immersing viewers in an overwhelming encounter with koi fish breaking through the surface of water. By exaggerating distorted features, the series captures a visceral and distored perspective of these creatures often seen as symbols of serenity and elegance.
The purpose of a koi ponds, traditionally designed to reduce stress and create a peaceful setting, are challenged in this series. Through tightly cropped compositions and vibrant colors, the series denies the viewer visual space, creating a sense of being confronted and consumed. The fish surge forward, blurring the line between beauty and unease, challenging traditional notions of what is aesthetically pleasing.
This body of work invites viewers to question their perceptions of beauty and how context distortion and proximity can evoke complex emotions. The series is a medition on the overwhelming nature of what lies just below the surface—both in water and within ourselves.
